The Charney Bassett Bus Shelter – revisited 2025

It was five years ago in 2019 when the Charney Army, led then by Peter Busby, renovated a dark and unwelcoming Bus Shelter, and Ruth Gerring assisted several local children to add their artwork to the internal walls. A Book Swap was also added, and the building was given a new lease of life.

Six years later and there’s a whole new generation of children in the village and Peter thought it was the right time to invite them to add their contribution to the Charney Art Gallery. The Charney Army added a fresh coat of paint to the ceiling (thanks Brian T.), varnished the bench (thanks Charles E.) and applied a couple of coats of paint to the floor. Other volunteers gave the inside of the building a good spring clean and relocated the resident spiders to a new and more appropriate location. Joe Ody used his best negotiating skills to get paints and brushes from Brewers of Abingdon free of charge!

Using the village Facebook page and Charney Chatter, eleven children wanted to make their own contribution to the walls! Ruth, again, was happy to lead the painting, and Rosemary, Jacquie and Steph were happy to assist. Steve Champion offered to pay for the paint used for the paintings, and during July and August, the new artworks were added.

The Book Swap was also given a spring clean, and is now open for business!

Huge thanks to all who worked so hard to make this possible.

The eleven children who added their own ideas were:

Arabella, Arthur, Estelle, Georgia, Lottie, Louis, Mimi, Octavia, Oliver, Seb and Vinnie.

And here are their masterpieces.
